On September 11, 2001, Sam and his wife, Quyen Tran, witnessed the attacks on the World Trade Center. They were once trapped in the dust cloud formed by the destruction of the South Tower.
However, they managed to successfully escape to Battery Park from where they witnessed the collapse of the North Tower. Sam captured video footage of him which has appeared in numerous documentaries.
