Richard Ayoade is an English comedian, actor, filmmaker, author and television presenter who won a BAFTA for his role on the television sitcom The Crowd . As a director, he has won British Independent Film Awards for his feature debut Submarine .
Born and raised in England
Richard Ellef Ayoade was born on May 23, 1977 in Hammersmith, London, England. He belongs to a mixed ethnicity and has English nationality.
He is the son of a Norwegian mother Dagny Baassuik Ayoade and a Nigerian father Layide Ade Laditi Ayoade .
Richard first attended St. Joseph’s College in Ipswich and then joined St Catharine’s College in Cambridge in 1995.
While at university he acted in theater and won a Martin Steele Award for his play. He was also president of the Amateur Theater Club Footlights. He graduated from the university in 1998.
He began his career as a writer
Richard Ayoade stared at his career as a writer; he co-wrote Garth Marenghi’s stage show Fright Knight along with Matthew Holness in 2000. He won the Perrier Comedy Award for co-writing the show.
He made his directing and acting debut in the spoof horror comedy series Garth Marenghi’s The Dark Place .
In 2006, he produced the television series Man to Man with Dean Learner . The same year, he was cast as Maurice Moss in the British sitcom The Crowds and continued to appear on the show until 2013. For his role in the series, he received a BAFTA Award for Best Male Performance in a Comedy Show in 2014.
Richard made his first feature Submarine in 2010 for which he was nominated for a BAFTA Award in 2012.
For his role in the 2013 film The Double , he was nominated for several awards, including the London Film Festival Award and the Tokyo International Film Festival Grand Prix Award. The other notable roles of him are in Man of Journey , The Crystal Maze and Strange Hill High .
