Quvenzhané Wallis was born on August 8, 2003, one of four children born to Venjie Wallis, Sr. , a trucker, and his wife, Qulyndreia Jackson , a teacher. His name is the result of the fusion of the names of his parents. His sister is Qunyquekya Wallis and his brothers are Vejon Wallis and Venjie Wallis, Jr.

At age 5, Quvenzhané Wallis auditioned for her first role when there was a nationwide casting call for the role of Hushpuppy. Casting directors were explicitly looking for children ages six and older, and five-year-old Wallis had to lie about her age to audition.
Her performance wowed casting directors and she was chosen out of 4,000 others to star in her first feature, 2012’s Beasts of the Wild South.
