Phil Simms is a former American football player who currently works as a television sportscaster for CBS. He played his entire playing career for the New York Giants.
early life :
Phil Simms was born on November 3, 1954 in Springfield, Kentucky. As a child, he studied at St. Dominic’s Elementary. He moved to Louisville Kentucky and later joined Southern High School for his higher education.
Phil Simms joined Morehead State University for his degree and that’s where he really started playing college level football. The college coach took notice and then in 1979 new San Francisco coach Bill Walsh flew to Morehead with his assistant to sign Simms for the third round draft. Surprisingly, he was signed by the New York Giants in the first round of the draft.

In his early days with the New York Giants, Phil Simms appeared in 5 games. He was named to the NFL Rookie Team of the Year in 1979. He was not a very consistent player in his early seasons due to injuries and fitness issues. In 1982, Phil Simms suffered a terrible knee ligament injury during the preseason game against the New York Jets and was sidelined for the entire 1982 season.
In the 1985 season, Phil Simms won the Pro Bowl Most Valuable Player of the Year award. He led his team to 10 wins in a season, the most for the Giants since 1963.
In 1987, the New York Giants faced the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI, which was the biggest game of Simms’ career. He gave a great performance and his team won the game 39-20 in which Phil Simms was awarded Super Bowl XXI Most Valuable Player.
In his final playing career, Phil Simms continued to fight for the Giants’ starting spot. He had good seasons in 1988, 89, 90 but his team couldn’t win anything and it was the same for him individually.
Phil Simms Played just 2 games through 13 weeks into the 1992 season, but when the head coach was changed, Simms found his place in the first team again. He started all 16 games in the 1993 season and after the season, he underwent shoulder operations. Phil Simms returned to fitness, but then decided to retire as a player in 1993, ending his 14-year career with the New York Giants. He was heralded as the New York Giants Ring of Honor after his retirement.

After retiring from playing, Phil Simms first became involved with ESPN, but later joined NBC’s broadcast team to utilize his media experience. Currently, he works as a commentator for CBS and NFL Networks.
