Sajak is the son of Patrick Leonard Sajak and Joyce Backal. His grandparents were Polish. His father was a worker. Her mother left her father and married Walter Backal.

Sajak has two brothers, David Sajdak and a half brother, William Backal.

In 1964, Sajak graduated from Farragut High School. Later, he attended Columbia College Chicago and began working as a receptionist at the Palmer House Hotel. During the Vietnam War, he served as a uniformed Disc Jockey for the American Forces Vietnam Network.
