Nick was born on October 9, 1976 in Minnesota, USA to parents Pamela and Roger Eric Swardson. He has two siblings, a sister named Rachel and a brother named John. He is the youngest of his parents’ children.
His father worked as an editor and journalist. His parents divorced when he was around 12 years old, in 1989. He had attended St. Paul Central High where he began acting and performing improv comedy. He was involved in alcohol and drugs during his school days for which he was expelled from school four times.
After graduating from his high school in 1996, he decided to pursue comedy instead of attending college.

He began performing stand-up at the age of 18 by attending open mic nights at the Acme Comedy Co. comedy club in Minneapolis. He has performed regularly at Knuckleheads, a defunct comedy club located in the Mall of America.
Based on the club owner’s encouragement to perform again at his first open mic ‘like goofiness’, he won the comedy club’s award for Funniest Person in the Twin Cities. He gained some attention over the course of time and was selected to perform at the United States Comedy Arts Festival when he was 20 years old.
