Mike Tomlin is a famous American football coach best known as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League. He was born on March 15, 1972 in Hampton, Virginia. He is listed as one of the talented coaches of all time, as he became the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl at the age of 36. He is also the third-youngest head coach among the four major North American professional sports.
He graduated in 1989 from Denbigh High School where he set a school record of 20 touchdown receptions. He also went to the College of William and Mary and became a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity as a tight end and wide receiver. He began his coaching career in 1995 as the wide receivers coach at the Virginia Military Institute under former West Virginia University head coach Bill Stewart.
Later in 1997, Tomlin was hired by Arkansas State University to train their defensive backs. He was there for about two seasons and then was hired by the University of Cincinnati as the defensive backs coach. Later, again in 2001, he was hired as the defensive back coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he learned the Tampa 2 defense.
On January 22, 2007, Tomlin became the Steelers’ 16th Head Coach. After the success of his previous teams, it was time to coach in the National Football League. Tomlin is the 10th African-American head coach in NFL history. The long journey of him coaching from one club to another really helped him to accumulate a lot of experience and he was named Motorola’s 2008 coach of the year. In 2011, he won his 50th game as head coach against the Cincinnati Bengals.
In regards to his personal life, he met his future wife, Kiya Winston, while they were studying at the College of William & Mary. This beautiful couple has three children together. Two sons Michael Dean and Mason and a daughter named Harlyn Quinn. Today, Tomlin lives with his wife and son in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood and attended Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.
Tomlin is a founding member of the Xi Theta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, The College of William & Marry and is also a Spring 1991 initiate of the Eta Omega Chapter at Old Dominion University. His name was also mentioned in an episode of the famous television series House in season 6 episode 8, Ignorance is Bliss.
