American makeup demonstrator, entrepreneur, and YouTube sensation Michelle Phan was a struggling waitress who helped her family financially by becoming a YouTube makeup guru and eventually a beauty superstar.

It didn’t take long for Phan to become the second most subscribed woman on You Tuber, ahead of Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga . Currently, Michelle Phan’s YouTube channel has amassed over 8 million subscribers and has uploaded over 300 YouTube videos.

Early life and education of Michelle Phan

Michelle Phan was born on April 11, 1987 in Boston, Massachusetts under the birth sign of Aries. Her Vietnamese parents raised her with her older brother. Steve Phan and a younger half-sister. Phan was very close to her father and even gave her a Vietnamese name, Tuyet Bang meaning avalanche.

His father had a serious gambling problem that led them to move from one place to another. Eventually, Phan’s family landed in Tampa, Florida. Unfortunately, Phan’s mother was heartbroken when her husband left her and she never returned for an unknown reason.

Later, Michelle Phan’s mother married, and Phan had a little half-sister, Christine. Phan’s relationship with her stepfather was good at first, but then it turned bad, so they had to move.

Phan attended Ringling College of Art and Design. In March 2014, she was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Arts.

At the age of 17, Phan started working as a waitress to help her mother. Phan’s mother did not allow her to wear makeup until she was a senior in high school. The family suffered greatly financially.

Michelle Phan had to sleep on the floor and they had almost no furniture. Even at school, she didn’t make any friends and Phan was teased because she was different and Asian. To deal with all the problems she was facing, Phan huddled in her room and began to draw and sketch. Art became Phan’s only outlet and she was later accepted to Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida.

Phan’s only problem was finding the $12,000 for tuition. However, that was covered up by her mother who paid for the first semester with the same money that her aunt and uncle had given them to buy furniture.

Michelle Phan received a laptop from the university through which she uploaded a seven-minute tutorial on “natural makeup”. Within a week, the video had 40,000 views and so it kept going.

YouTube career

In 2005, Phan had a personal blog where he discussed different makeup tutorials. Under the Xanga name Ricebunny, Phan began blogging video tutorials and began posting to YouTube in May 2007, from where she began her career.

Michelle Phan is best known for her tutorials on Lady Gaga’s Poker Face and Lady Gaga ‘s Bad Romance . Buzzfeed featured many of her videos in 2009 and 2010, which made them viral and she soon began earning from both ad revenue and service desks, for which she quit her job.

In 2011, Phan co-founded ‘My glam’ which is a monthly beauty subscription service with various beauty products associated with tutorials on the website.

In 2012, Phan’s channel was so successful that Google offered him $1 million to create a 20-hour piece of content. He changed his life. Michelle Phan also became a YouTube advertising partner and launched FAWN, a multi-channel women’s lifestyle YouTube network.

Adding to the overwhelming joy, Michelle Phan was asked to incorporate Lancôme products and then L’Oreal gave Phan her own makeup line.

On August 15, 2013, Phan merged with L’Oreal Group and launched Michelle Phan’s EM (EM; Vietnamese world for little sister or darling). Many of the EM products are nods to Phan’s background, which includes her time as an art student.

The couple first met in a Parisian cafe on Valentine’s Day 2011 in New York and eventually started dating.

Michelle Phan admitted to having Botox and fillers, but it was also rumored that she had plastic surgery which she denied. Few of her before and after photos revealed that she had undergone jaw, nose and double eyelid surgery.

Despite expanding his brand in ways he could hardly dream of, Phan’s business still revolves around his family.

Ultra Records sued Phan in 2014 for copyright infringement related to the music he used for his YouTube videos. She sought up to $150k in infringement damages totaling $7.5 million.

In August 2015 both parties settled the matter out of court which has not yet been made public.
