Sam was born as Michael Alan Sam Jr. on January 7, 1990 in Galveston, Texas, USA. As far as his nationality is concerned, he is an American belonging to the African-American ethnicity. He is the son of Michael Sam and JoAnn Sam. He is the seventh of eight children.
Sam attended Hitchcock High School in Hitchcock, Texas. He began traveling as a water boy with the school’s varsity football team while in eighth grade. Later, he became a member of the team playing defensive end and offensive tackle.
Sam moved to the University of Missouri accepting a scholarship offer from the University. There he played for the Tigers, competing in the Big 12 Conference. He recorded 3.5 sacks, 24 tackles, including seven tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, one interception and one kick blocked as a redshirt freshman during that time.

Later, Sam played with various teams including the St. Louis Rams, Dallas Cowboys, and Montreal Alouettes. He signed a two-year deal with the Montreal Alouettes on May 22, 2015, which later made him the first openly gay player in league history.
