Melissa Crystal O’Neil is a Canadian singer and actress who is the first Canadian female winner of the reality competition show Canadian Idol . She appeared in its third season and won the title in 2005. She is also a musical theater actress who is recognized for her role, Two/Portia Lin in Dark Matters; a science fiction series that was canceled in September 2017.

Melissa O’Neil was born on July 12, 1988 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She is the daughter of Alison Yeung and Tim O’Neil . Her father is of Irish descent and her mother is Chinese, making her a mix of Chinese and Irish ethnicity. Her maternal grandfather gave her the Chinese name, Oh Seemun . She grew up in Calgary Alberta.

Melissa attended Terry Fox Junior High School and later joined Lester B. Pearson High School. As she was interested in the world of entertainment since her childhood, she Melissa participated in various theater productions on the Calgary scene. Before coming into the spotlight, she used to work at a day care center and was in local musical theater productions.
