Famed British reggae vocalist of Jamaican descent, Max Alfred became one of two British reggae musicians to have a number 1 song on the US Billboard charts with his song titled ‘Close to You’ in 1990.
Early age and education
English reggae vocalist Max Alfred was born on June 10, 1961 in Lewisham, London, England. He is the second youngest of nine brothers and sisters. He was brought up in Lewisham in a joint family.
As a child, Max used to listen to a variety of music such as gospel, reggae, R&B, and pop music. His Pentecostal missionary mother encouraged him to learn music. He began singing in church and erecting speaker cabinets for the Jah Shaka and Negus Negast sound systems as a teenager.
Max’s cousin, Jacob Miller, was a Jamaican reggae artist and a Rasta. Unfortunately, Miler died in 1980 in a tragic car accident. Maxi belongs to the British nationality and the ethnic origin of him; he is of mixed ethnicity.
Career
Maxi Priest began his career as a singer at the south London reggae Soundsystem, Saxon Studio International. After releasing a few independent singles, he released his debut major album under the self-titled Maxi Priest in 1988.
After a couple of years, Max became one of two British reggae musicians to have a number one on the US Billboard: ‘Close to You’. The song also became a huge hit in the US, peaking at number twenty.
Additionally, Max has worked with Completed Hammond , Apache Indian, Roberta Flack and Lee Ritenour as well. Max then recorded a cover of the Japanese band, The Rainbow’s song ‘Vivid Colors’ for the band’s English tribute album in 2012.
Max’s 2014 album Easy to Love ranked number two on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart.

Maxi Priest, 56, has not made any mention of his wife, however he is a single father of three. His first child, Marvin Cornell Elliott, was born on October 27, 1981.
