A technically gifted and tactically versatile central defender, Mats Hummels can also play as a defensive midfielder. He currently plays as a central defender for Bayern Munich and the Germany national team. The footballer made his senior club debut in January 2008 after officially signing a contract with Borussia Dortmund . Having represented Germany at both under-20 and under-21 levels, Hummels made his full international debut on 13 May 2010, playing in a friendly match against Malta . He became the lone scorer in the 2014 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal against France. After his performance in the tournament, he was also included in the 10-man shortlist for the FIFA Ballon d’Or award.

Mats Hummels was born in Bergisch Gladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany on December 16, 1988. He is the son of Ulla Holthoff and former footballer and manager Hermann Hummels . His father worked at Bayern Munich as a youth coordinator. He received early inspiration to become a soccer player from his father.
Hummels is German by nationality and with regard to his ethnicity, he is Caucasian. He grew up in his hometown Bergisch Gladbach together with his younger brother, Janas Hummes who is a retired footballer; he did not play anymore due to multiple injuries.

At the young age of 6, Mats Hummels joined Bayern Munich’s youth soccer academy. And he signed a contract professionally at the end of 2006 for four years. But he moved to Borussia Dortmund in January 2008 on loan. Widely known for his powerful tackling and his strength in the air, he quickly established himself as one of the club’s best defenders.
The two have reportedly been together since Hummels was 19 years old. Hummels and his wife Fischer have been blessed with a son, born on January 11, 2018.
Hummels is also involved in various charitable projects. He joined the Common Goal project in August 2017 and became the second footballer to donate 1% of his salary to a collective fund that helped football organizations deliver sustainable social development around the world.
