Marilyn McCoo , American singer, actress, and television host best known as the lead vocalist of The Fifth Dimension , has also hosted the ’80s music countdown series Solid Gold. She has been married to her fellow 5th Dimension member, Billy Davis Jr.
Early life, family and education
Marilyn McCoo was born on September 30, 1943 in Jersey City, New Jersey, United States of America, to father Waymon McCoo and Mary McCoo .
His parents were doctors. He grew up along with his three siblings; two sisters and one brother. The family moved to Los Angeles when she was seven years old. There she began her singing, piano and dance lessons.
Marilyn is a US citizen and belongs to the white ethnic group. After completing her high school studies, she attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where she graduated with a degree in business administration.
Career and achievements
Marilyn McCoo made her television debut at the age of 15; she appeared on Art Linkletter’s Talent Show and eventually began modeling. Later in 1962, she competed in the Miss Bronze California beauty pageant and won the title of ‘Miss Grand Talent’.
Marilyn became a member of the Hi-Fi band after being invited by photographer Lamonte McLemore , who later joined her in the Fifth Dimension.
He met Billy Davis Jr. in 1966 when he founded his band 5th Dimension. Other members of the group include Ron Townson and Florence LaRue . His first big hit was Up, Up, and Away .
The song was written by Jimmy Webb and recorded in 1967. The song received four Grammy Awards in 1968 and was the title track on the group’s first hit LP.
In addition to being a singer, Marilyn is also an actress. She has appeared in many hit movies like Grizzly Adams and the Legend of the Dark Mountain (1999) and My Mommy Is a Werewolf (1989).
She has also appeared on The Jamie Foxx Show along with Davis.
