Lola Van Wagenen was born in December 1938, in Provo, Utah, United States. She was raised in a Mormon family. In 1982, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Vermont College. Wagenen later went on to study at New York University and received his Master’s in Public History in 1984. And in 1994, he completed his Ph.D. in American History from the same university. She also received the Distinguished Alumni / Alumnae Achievement Award from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at NYU.

Lola Van Wagenen has worked for various charities since the 1970s, including Shelburne Farms, which is a nonprofit educational center for sustainability, the Vermont Historical Society, and the New York Women’s Foundation. In 1977, she also worked for the Appropriate Technology Task Force with the US Office of Technology Assessment.
In 1979, Wagenen was also part of the National Commission on the International Year of the Child. He also founded The Sun Fund. In coordination with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, she also organized the Women’s Energy Education Project in 1979 and 1980.
Wagenen also serves on the selection committee for Robertson Scholars.The two founded the New American Scholarship Fund at Champlain College in 2012. She had previously exchanged vows with her first husband, the prominent actor. Robert Redford , on September 12, 1958, in Provo, Utah.
The couple first met in Los Angeles in 1957. The two welcomed their first child, a son named Scott Anthony Redford , on September 1, 1959. They also have three children. Amy Redford , Shauna Redford , and James Redford . She also has five grandchildren. After being married for twenty-seven years, the couple divorced in 1985.
