Biography of Jaggi Vasudev

Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev is a familiar face in the world of Yoga . He is a yogi, mystic, visionary, and humanitarian whose life has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. He is a spiritual leader who has dedicated his life to various social and community development activities and has earned a good response from the people.

Early life and education of Jaggi Vasudev

Sadhguru was born as Jagadish Vasudev on September 3, 1957 in Mysore, India. He has an Indian nationality and belongs to the Brahmin ethnic group. He is the son of Susheela and Dr. Vasudev. He is the youngest of his parents’ four children.

His father was an ophthalmologist with the Indian Railways. As a result, the family moved frequently from one place to another. His meeting with Malladihalli Sri Raghavendra Swamiji, who taught him a set of simple yoga asanas, became a great influence on his presentation of his life as a yogi. He kept up the practice regularly and became more interested in yoga.

Sadhguru attended Demonstration School, Mysore and completed his school education in 1973. He then transferred to Mysore University where he developed interests in travel and motorcycles. Along with his friends, he would often gather at Chamundi Hill near Mysore and go on night tours.

Spiritual experiences of Jaggi Vasudev

According to Sadhguru, the simple yoga that he was taught kept happening without a single day of rest and led to a much deeper experience later on. He traveled to many places in the country on his motorcycle.

Sadhguru’s travel experience made him decide to earn some quick money. He later started several successful businesses such as poultry farms, brick kilns, and construction companies.

Jagadish Vasudev to Yogi Sadhguru

Sadhguru had his first spiritual experience on September 23, 1982. It is said that at the age of 25, he rode to Chamundi Hill, sat on a rock to meditate, and had his first spiritual experience there. He led his first yoga class with seven participants in Mysore in 1983.

Sadhguru started to develop his yoga classes in Karnataka and Hyderabad, traveling on his motorcycle. He led the first program at the newly established Isha Yoga Center premises in 1994. He has described yoga as Dhyanalinga, a temple of yogic meditation.

Jaggi Vasudev’s Isha Foundation

Sadhguru established a non-religious, non-profit organization called the Isha Foundation in 1992. The organization is run by volunteers and hosts a number of programs to increase self-awareness through yoga.

His daughter, Radhe, is currently married to Sandeep Narayan, a vocalist and musician from Chennai. The wedding ceremony was held on September 3, 2014 at the Isha Yoga Center on the outskirts of Coimbatore.

His wife Vijaykumari is no more. According to reports, she died on January 23, 1997.
