Winkler is the son of mother Ilse Anna Marie Winkler (b. 1993 -d.2002 ) and father Harry Irving Winkler (b. 1903-d. 1995). His parents moved from Berlin, Germany to the United States in 1939, on the eve of World War II.

When Winkler was young, he was anxious about his undiagnosed dyslexia (reading disorder) due to failing at his school. His father used to chastise him for his difficulties in school and used to call him ‘stupid dog’.
