After joining VICE, he interviewed ISIS fighters in Iraq and covered disputed territory in the East China Sea. In addition, he also reported on various topics such as the Syrian refugee, the effects of gerrymandering on American democracy, and sexual assault at the university, among others.
According to Toboni, he did a story about transgender youth and it was one of his most challenging assignments. She said,
“I think, in retrospect, I realize I was a little afraid of the story because I didn’t really fully understand the subject and I didn’t know how I felt about it. So, for me, it was really a challenge to see young people experience such internal conflict and be tortured by their own being.”
After making the story, she was recognized by the Newswomen’s Club of New York at the Front Page Awards.
