He gained his well-deserved fame in 1962 when Chakiris won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture in the 1961 American romantic musical tragedy film West Side Story . He was cast along with Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer , Gina Trikonis , and others.
After that, Chakiris appeared in television series such as The Jackie Gleason Show, Fantasy Island Returns, The Partridge Family, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Last of Summer Wine , and others. Her other film credits include Diamond Head, La niña di Bube, The Shining Sun, Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, Jekyll and Hyde… Together Again , and others.
