Early life of Fonseca

Juan Fernando Fonseca Carrera, known artistically as Fonseca, is a Colombian singer-songwriter, born in Bogotá on May 29, 1979, son of Ana Marcela Carrera and brother of Alejandro Fonseca.

The singer-songwriter had his first approaches to music at school when he formed a rock band called Nash, he also comments that in the last year of school he makes the decision to formally dedicate himself to music after recording at home and with the help of the music teacher an album with four songs and unpublished and six covers; in that same year he also decided to use “Fonseca” as a name for his musical career after he was always called that by teachers and classmates.

Fonseca ventures for the first time into the professional artistic field in 2002 with his self-titled album, with which he received a great reception from the public and radio exposure in his native Colombia, due to the mixture of cheerful and somewhat folkloric rhythms.

Trajectory and history of Fonseca

Three years after the release of his first album, 2005, Fonseca signed with the transnational EMI Music Colombia and brought to light his next musical proposal, Corazón; placing great songs like Te mando flores, which became his first international success and remained more than 22 consecutive weeks in the position one on the radio. It was followed by other singles such as Hace tiempo and Cómo me mira.

Thanks to the single Te mando flores Fonseca won a Latin Grammy for “Best Tropical Song” in 2006; he was also awarded “Best New Tropical Artist” by Premios Lo Nuestro and Premios MTV Latin America. Additionally, Corazon received the award of “Best Tropical Album” by the Billboard Latin Music Awards.

In 2008, Fonseca released his third album: Gratitud; with which he debuts at number one and begins the international tour Gratitour, which toured more than 25 countries, including the United States performing in 16 cities with resounding success. It should be noted that in each of his presentations he included songs such as Arroyito and Estar lejos, which he recorded as a duet with Willie Colón. These songs earned him Latin Grammy nominations. The tour also took Fonseca for the first time to Europe and China.

For 2011, Fonseca presented his production entitled Ilusión, with which he obtained in just four months, fivefold Platinum Record and Diamond Record for high sales in Colombia; Along with the release he toured more than 17 cities. This album was produced by Fonseca and Bernardo Ossa, producer of previous albums such as Corazón (2005) and Gratitud (2008) and the Venezuelan Andrés Levin, it fuses different musical genres such as vallenato, pop, rock and merengue, and has great songs composed by the singer next to renowned composers including Claudia Brant, Descemer Bueno and Alejandro Bassi, among others. On August 13 of that same year he collaborates in the concert of Carlos Vives entitled Vives and his friends of the tour “More deep heart” at the El Campín Stadium in Bogotá before more than 42 thousand people, singing the theme La Tierra del olvido.

Thanks to Ilusión Fonseca he won a Latin Grammy in 2012 in the category: “Best Tropical Fusion Album“. In that same year he was also awarded the Texas Award for Best Tropical Artist and received an important Grammy nomination for “Best Latin Pop Album”. With Eres mi sueño, the first single from this album, it remained for weeks in the top 10 positions in the United States, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela countries where the album reached Gold Record. It should be noted that Ilusión was chosen as the third best Latin album of 2012 in the list of the 10 best Latin albums of 2012 of the Chicago Sun Times.

On July 29, 2014 Fonseca released a symphonic DVD, a concert that was a compilation of all his successes with more than one hundred musicians of the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia, under the direction of Belgian conductor Paul Dury and conducted by German-Colombian conductor Christian Schmid. The recording and mixing engineering was carried out by Eduardo Bergallo who worked for Soda Stereo, Gustavo Cerati, Natalia Lafourcade and Shakira; the arrangements were in charge of Juan Andrés Otálora. This work gave him his third Platinum Album for high sales in Colombia and was winner of the Latin Grammy in 2014 as “Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album”.

In June 2015, Fonseca premiered the single: Entre mi vida y la tuya; first musical cut of his fifth studio album Connection, released worldwide on October 2, 2015, becoming number one on the Billboard charts. This album was composed by Fonseca and produced by award-winning producer Julio Reyes Copello who has collaborated with Marc Anthony, Nelly Furtado, Alejandro Sanz, Diego Torres, Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin. Conexión was positioned in the first places of sale within weeks of its launch. The video of the second single from this album: Ya no me faltas; exceeded one million visits in five days. It was certified quadruple Platinum and was positioned in its premiere as number one in Colombia and Peru and entered the top 10 in Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Ecuador and Guatemala, among others.

Similarly, on June 17, 2015 in the city of Los Angeles Fonseca received the special award “Sesac Latina Contemporary Icon Award”, highlighting him as “one of the most successful and influential singer-songwriters in the world”. Also, in October 2015 he received the “Winner Award” at the Musa Awards, an award that was established by the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame. The third single, Vine a buscarte has been since its release in the first places of audience in the different Latin American countries. It was the winner of the 2016 Latin Grammy for “Best Tropical Song.”

This fifth album of Fonseca featured the participation of Colombian singer Juanes in the song Y Tú, where he accompanies him with electric guitar and voice, being another of the special guests in Conexión is the Puerto Rican artist Víctor Manuelle who accompanies him in the song Amor eterno, by the late Juan Gabriel.

Never in the new history of music, Fonseca released a second album in that year, Homenaje, which was released on October 2, 2015 and is precisely a tribute to the music of Diomedes Díaz.

This album was produced by Bernardo Ossa and is composed of twelve songs by the late Colombian singer Diomedes Díaz now sung in the style of Fonseca. This album featured the participation of several icons of vallenato music such as Álvaro López (accordion in Homenaje al Maestro), Cocha Molina (accordion in Tres canciones, La ventana marroncita) and the voices of Chabuco (Brindo Con El Alma), Martín Elías (Mi primera cana) and Rafael Santos (Mi muchacho); and was winner of the Latin Grammy in 2016 as “Best Cumbia/Vallenato Album” and in December of that same year Conexión was also nominated for the Grammys that would take place on February 12, 2017 in Los Angeles, in the category “Best Tropical Album“, additional received the nomination in the category “Tropical Album of the Year” in Premio Lo Nuestro in February 2017.

Also in 2017, Fonseca participated on the small screen as a jury in the program A otro nivel, a Colombian contest broadcast and produced by Caracol Televisión, where together with great music personalities such as Kike Santander and Silvestre Dangond seek to discover new talents in the music industry.

In March 2017, Fonseca signed with Magnus Media, the entertainment and sports company founded in 2015 by Marc Anthony, to be co-manager with his representative and Carlos Saavedra. In that same month and year, he received the award in the Tropical category for Vine A buscarte during the twenty-fifth annual ASCAP Latin Music Awards.

On May 29, 2020, Fonseca released “Compadres”, an album in collaboration with musician Andrés Cepeda that includes 10 songs, which reflect the great friendship of Colombian artists. This is a work where you can find references of genres as different as pop, merengue, reggae and vallenato and where it has the participation of other Colombian artists such as Llane and Cholo Valderrama. On September 29, 2020, Fonseca releases the album “Compadres” is nominated by the Latin Recording Academy, Latin Grammy in its twenty-first version as Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, an award he received on November 19 during the award ceremony.

In 2022, Fonseca returned to the musical stage with the album Viajante, which consists of 10 musical cuts and great duos such as with the group Matisse, Cimafunk and Greeicy, Cali and Dandee.
