Eugene Robinson was born as Eugene Harold Robinson on March 12, 1954 in Orangeburg, South Carolina in the United States of America. He is American by nationality and African American by ethnicity. He got his early education from Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School.

Robinson joined the University of Michigan for his higher education. He used to write for The Michigan Daily school newspaper when he was in college.

Eugene Robinson’s journalistic career began in 1976 with his entry into the San Francisco Chronicle. His job at the time was to cover the trial of publishing heiress Patty Hearst.

Robinson made the big turn in 1980 when he joined the Washington Post. He worked as a town hall reporter at the newspaper, slowly climbing the ladder of success with his hard work and determination.

After the Washington Post, Robinson became assistant city editor in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and London, England. He reported as a foreign correspondent during his tenure in this role. Following that, he became the deputy editor of the same newspaper.
