After gaining a wealth of experience with the job, Thompson moved to NBC affiliate WDIV-TV in Detroit in 1986. There, she worked as a general assignment reporter for 11 years.

She was honored with seven Emmy Awards for a variety of stories including her coverage of the Jessica DeBoer custody battle, a profile of Kirk Kerkorian and her attempted takeover of Chrysler.

NBC career

Thompson joined NBC News as a national correspondent in 1997. She reported a variety of stories, including Daimler Benz’s takeover of Chrysler and the death of John F. Kennedy Jr. She became chief financial correspondent in March 2005.

She was chief financial correspondent covering topics such as the economic impact of Hurricane Katrina and the Martha Stewart trials.

Thompson served as a senior correspondent for NBC News in 2000. He covered the presidential campaigns of Democratic Sen. Bill Bradley and Republican Sen. John McCain. She has also covered a variety of national stories during that time.
