Andrew Ridgeley is an English singer, songwriter and producer. He gained worldwide popularity as one half of the English pop duo, Wham! with the late pop icon George Michael. The famous environmentalist has also tried his luck in Formula Three.
Andrew is of Scottish, Italian, and Egyptian descent.
Andrew Ridgeley was born Andrew John Ridgeley on January 26, 1963. He was born to an Italian/Egyptian father Alberto Mario Zacharia and a Scottish mother Jennifer John Dunlop.
His younger brother Paul Ridgeley is also a musician. Although born in Windlesham, Surrey, England, Andrew spent his childhood in Bushey, Hertfordshire, and attended the local Bushey Mead School. It was where he met his future bandmate. George Michael.
Andrew’s journey with George Michael
Andrew and George were previously in the band, The Executive , with other schoolmates. After its short run, Andrew and George collaborated on the formation of the band, Wham! .
Inner Vision Records signed the first major record label to them. Michael was the lead vocalist, songwriter and producer for the group, with Andrew taking over the role of guitarist and backing vocalist.
Wham! catapulted the duo to mainstream stardom with their debut single, Wham Rap (Enjoy What You Do). Teenagers at the time, the duo focused on the teenage demographic and became a staple of the British pop genre.
Between 1981 and 1986, the pop duo enjoyed immense worldwide success. They released four studio albums and toured extensively around the world.
