Alek Skarlatos is a former US Army National Guardsman. He has been honored with US President Barack Obama’s US Army Soldier’s Medal along with other US soldiers for arresting a gunman on a Paris-bound train traveling from Amsterdam via Brussels.
Early age and education
He was born Alek Skarlatos Alexander Reed Scarlatos on October 10, 1992, to father Emanuel Skarlatos and Heidi Hansen in Castro Valley, California. He has two brothers, brothers. He was raised in Sacramento County, California. Skarlatos has American and French nationality.
She met former Air Force personnel Spencer Stone and television personality Anthony Sadler at a school in Fair Oaks, California. They remained friends into adulthood. All three men described their emotional connection to Christianity. Skarlatos completed his graduation from Roseburg High School.
Race
In 2012, Skarlatos joined the Oregon Army National Guard where he achieved the rank of Specialist. He was then posted to Afghanistan for nine months. In 2015, about a month before the terrorist event on a French train, he was reinstated for two more years.
The infamous attack on the Thalys train
Skarlatos and his two childhood friends were traveling from Amsterdam to Paris on Thalys train 9364 during their vacation in Europe on August 21, 2015. Meanwhile, a 25-year-old Moroccan, Ayoub El-Khazzani, emerged from the bathroom armed with a AKM. assault rifle, a Luger pistol, a box knife, and ammunition for the rifle in a backpack.
Two people, a Frenchman, Mark Moogalian, and an American, tried to stop the attacker. Moogalian snatched the rifle from him, however, he was shot as he was trying to save his wife. Skarlatos’s friend, Spencer Stone ran up to the attacker and attacked him before the attacker slashed him.
Skarlatos then picked up the attacker’s rifle and struck him over the head with the barrel. A 62-year-old man helped him subdue the attacker while Stone choked him unconscious. Ayoub El-Khazzani was then tied up and Stone provided life-saving assistance to Moogalian by pressing on an exposed and bleeding artery.
A day later, Starlatos and his friends made international headlines for their heroic work in capturing the terrorist. French President Francois Hollande awarded Skarlatos along with the other heroes France’s highest decoration, Knights of the Legion of Honor.
Subsequently, US President Barack Obama called the three Americans thanking them for their heroic actions. Later, Sacramento, California Mayor Kevin Johnson held a parade honoring Skarlatos, Stone, and Sadler.
Two years later, Skarlatos retired from his military service in November 2017.
Television and other works
Days after the train incident, Skarlatos was announced as a competitor on season 21 of Dancing With the Stars in which he was partnered with dancer Lindsay Arnold. They reached the final of the show and finished third.
Also, Skarlatos has appeared as himself in a movie. The 15:17 to Paris directed by Clint Eastwood which was based on the attack on the Thalys train of 2015.
