Billy Dee Williams is an American actor, voice actor and artist born on April 6, 1937 in New York, New York, United States.
Billy Dee is best known as Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars franchise, first in the early 1980s, and almost forty years later in The Rise of Skywalker (in 2019), marking one of the longest intervals between on-screen portrayals of a character by the same actor in the history of American cinema
Billy Dee was born in New York and grew up with his twin sister Loretta in Harlem. In 1945, Billy Dee made his Broadway theater debut at the age of seven in The Firebrand of Florence. Billy Dee then graduated from the High School of Music & Art, then won a painting scholarship to the National Academy of Fine Arts and Design, where Billy Dee won a Hallgarten Prize for painting in the mid-1950s .
To finance his art supplies, Billy Dee returned to theatre, film and television. Billy Dee continued to create art, his work has since been exhibited in galleries and collections around the world.
His film debut was in The Last Angry Man (1959), but Billy Dee gained national attention in the TV movie Brian’s Song (in 1971) which earned him an Emmy nomination for Best Actor. Billy Dee appeared in at least 70 films over six decades, including critically acclaimed and popular films such as Lady Sings the Blues (1972) and Mahogany (1975), both starring Billy Dee, partnered with Diana Ross ; and Nighthawks (1981).
In the 1980s, Billy Dee played Lando Calrissian’s most enduring role, becoming the first African-American actor to play a major role in the Star Wars franchise, in The Empire Strikes Back (in 1980), as well as Return of the Jedi (1983). Billy Dee also delivered Lando as a voice actor in video games, animated series, and the national public radio adaptation of The Empire Strikes Back.
Billy Dee was inducted into the Black Filmmaker’s Hall of Fame in 1984 and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1985. Another lasting franchise relationship began with Batman (in 1989) playing attorney Harvey Dent, a role which was also developed into a villainous alter-ego, Two-Face, which Billy Dee voiced for The Lego Batman Movie (2017).
His television work has over sixty credits from 1966, including recurring roles over the decades on Gideon’s Crossing; Dynasty, General Hospital: night shift; with the general hospital. Many cameos, as well as supporting roles, included being paired with Marla Gibbs on The Jeffersons, 227, and The Hughleys.
Later work included voice acting in the series Titan Maximum (2009), as well as appearing on the reality show Dancing with the Stars (2014). Billy Dee’s work has earned him numerous awards and accolades, including three NAACP Image Awards, as well as the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award.

Billy Dee grew up in New York, the son of Loretta Anne (1915-2016), a West Indian-born elevator operator at the Lyceum Theater and aspiring Montserrat artist, with William December Williams, Sr. (In 1910 to 2008) , an African-American caretaker with Native American ancestry from Texas.
Billy Dee grew up in Harlem on 110th Street between Lenox and 5th, next to the Central Park North – 110th Street station.
Billy Dee has a twin sister, Loretta, and they were raised by their maternal grandmother while their parents worked multiple jobs.
Billy Dee’s mother had studied opera for years, becoming an accomplished opera star who wanted to get into film; the family was richly cultured, exposing the children to drawing, painting, theater and similar creative experiences at an early age; he will remain a fan of the arts, including opera.

In 1984, Billy Dee purchased a “contemporary Zen” home in the Trousdale Estates neighborhood of Beverly Hills, California; Billy Dee sold it in 2012. Billy Dee filed for an out-of-court divorce from Nakagami in 1993, but they reconciled and lived together again in 1997.
Billy Dee was arrested on January 30, 1996, after allegedly assaulting Billy Dee’s girlfriend, whom police have not identified. He posted $50,000 bond. LA police said the woman had minor bruises as well as scratches. The attorney’s office filed misdemeanor domestic violence charges and dissuaded a witness.
The woman later said the incident was her fault and hoped the police would drop the case. In a plea bargain, Billy Dee was ordered to undergo 52 counseling sessions. In a 2019 interview, he says he has never slapped or abused women.
In late 2019, Billy Dee opened up about his feminine side in an interview and used both masculine and feminine pronouns to refer to himself. The media widely speculated that he might be gender fluid, but Billy Dee clarified that he was referring to the anima as well as the animus: the feminine side of men with the masculine side women in Jungian psychology.
