Bill Gaither, born William J. Gaither, is an American singer and songwriter of southern gospel and contemporary Christian music. He was born on March 28, 1936 in Alexandria, Indiana, USA to George and Lela Gaither.

Bill attended college at Anderson College, where he graduated after a year of Taylor University. In 1959 Gaither graduated from Anderson with a major in English and a minor in music, after which he served as an English teacher

He quit his teaching job in 1967 and worked full-time in the Christian music industry. This was after a few years of trying to manage both his music career and his full-time teaching job

Gaither first pursued a career with the Bill Gaither Trio in the 1950s. He formed the band while in college at Anderson College. The group consisted of himself, his sister Mary Ann and his brother Danny Gaither.

The trio recorded their breakthrough song “He Touched Me” in 1964. Around 1964, his sister’s place was replaced by Bill’s wife, Gloria Gaither

Bill married Gloria Sickal in 1962 , his wife became the best writing partner he could have found anywhere. The couple spent the first five years of their union juggling full-time jobs teaching, writing, singing, recording and publishing until music became their full-time job. time in 1967.
