She gained much notoriety in the United States thanks to the series My Three Sons , and starred in horror spin-offs, such as Swamp Women , They Conquered the World , and Emissary from Another World . Actress Beverly Garland died on December 6, at the age of 82, after a long illness, according to her stepson Packy Smith. The actress had been dedicated to acting for five decades.
Beverly Fessenden was born in Santa Cruz (California), on October 17, 1926. She studied drama with Anita Arliss, sister of the prestigious British actor George Arliss ( The Green Goddess , Disraeli ). She started on the stages of small theaters, and also participated in radio serials. She made her film debut with an important supporting role in the classic film noir With the hours counted .
In 1951 she married fellow actor Richard Garland , and adopted his last name forever, although they divorced in 1953. She remarried businessman Fillmore Crank, with whom she had a son and started a luxurious hotel in Los Angeles.
Fundamental in her career was her meeting with Roger Corman , the king of series B, who gave her one of the main roles in Las mujeres del swamp , where she was a convict who planned to escape from prison with her cronies. Corman was so pleased with her work that he next cast her in the title role of The Sheriff of Oracle , a low-budget western. She played Rose Hood, the wife of the sheriff of a small town, who after the murder of her husband took her place and tried to catch the culprits. She reprized with Corman in They Conquered the World , Emissary from Another World, and Naked Paradise .
Beverly Garland had a very minor uncredited role in William Wyler ‘s Desperate Hours . She also played important roles in Charles Vidor ‘s The Mask of Pain and in Airport 75 , one of the great successes of disaster cinema. But she concentrated mostly on television, as she appeared in shows like Whiplash , Jim West , The Gunslinger , Charlie’s Angels , Remington Steele , Friends , Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and Seventh Heaven ., almost always in fixed roles. Her greatest success on the small screen was obtained with the series My Three Sons , where she played the wife of the protagonist, Fred MacMurray .
