  1. As a child, Betty went to the Sierra Nevada for a family vacation which sparked her interest in wildlife.
  2. Growing up, she aspired to be a ranger, but at the time women weren’t allowed to become rangers, so it remained a far-fetched dream for her.
  3. After giving up her dream of becoming a Ranger, she became a writer and wrote and starred in a school graduation play, she discovered her fascination with acting and decided to pursue an acting career.
  4. Her television career began in 1939, just 3 months after graduating from high school, when she got the opportunity to sing songs with her classmates, The Merry Widow, on an experimental Los Angeles television station.
  5. She later got a professional job as an actress and model at the Bliss Hayden Little Theater.
  6. In 1939, World War II broke out, Betty decided to put her career on hold and volunteer for the American Women’s Volunteer Services, which she would assist in moving military supplies around California. She also participated in events and activities that took place before the troops were sent overseas.
  7. When the war ended in 1945, she began seeking auditions but was repeatedly denied as all studios claimed she was unphotogenic. Fed up with that, she searched for radio shows that didn’t require photos.
  8. The first jobs she got were reading commercials and playing Bitparts. She also sometimes made crowd noises and made $5 per show.
  9. For some time she worked desperately and even did for nothing. Also, some of the shows she appeared in were Blondie , The Big Gildersleeve , and This Is Your FBI . After that fight, she finally got her own show. She then got her own radio show, called The Betty White Show .
  10. In 1949, Betty was cast to co-host with Al Jarvis on his daily live TV variety show called Hollywood on TV , which aired on KFWB radio and KLAC-TV in Los Angeles, which she later hosted herself when Al Jarvis left in 1951.
  11. Betty was nominated for the first time for the Emmy Award for “Best Actress” on television, which competed against legendary stars such as Judith Anderson, Helen Hayes and Imogene Coca. It also marked the beginning of this new category for women on television in Emmy history.
