Ellen’s mother, Betty DeGeneres (full name: Elizabeth Jane DeGeneres) is an American LGBT rights activist and former speech pathologist. She is an active member of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
And also the first direct spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign National Exit Project. In 1997, when her daughter Ellen was high profile, she rose to fame.
DeGeneres is the author of two books: Love, Ellen: A Mother-Daughter Journey and Just a Mom. In her tilted book, “In Love,” she discusses her daughter’s act of coming out as a lesbian and also her journey from passive acceptance to becoming a strong LGBT advocate.
In the book, DeGeneres also describes the media scrutiny she received following Ellen’s exit. She continues the themes of her second book “Just a Mom. Additionally, she wrote “Ask Betty” a column for the (now defunct) Planet Out website.
In ‘The Puppy Episode’ of the television sitcom Ellen, in which her daughter Ellen’s character comes out, she appeared as an extra. DeGeneres appears on numerous episodes of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, sitting in the audience. She is a breast cancer survivor and discusses it in public appearances. In 2005, Ellen spoke publicly for the first time about the abuse she suffered from her stepfather when she was a teenager.
