Ben Cross
He was one of the protagonists of “Chariots of Fire”, one of the great successes of British cinema. Ben Cross passed away on August 18, 2020, at the age of 72. “Ben passed away suddenly today after a short illness,” his agent in Los Angeles confirmed to the AFP agency, without specifying the place of death, although it apparently occurred in Vienna, where he lived.
Born in London on December 16, 1947, Harry Bernard Cross –his full name– belonged to a very humble Catholic family of extraction. He studied at Bishop Thomas Grant Secondary Modern School in Streatham, south of the British capital. At the age of 22 he entered the Royal London Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). After a chapter of the series The Professionals , he began to make a name for himself in the theater.
Ben Cross made his film debut alongside Sean Connery and Michael Caine in Richard Attenborough ‘s war film A Bridge Too Far . After the enormous success achieved on the stage with the musical “Chicago”, where he gave life to the lawyer Billy Flynn, he was recruited to star alongside Ian Charleson in the film Chariots of Fire , by Hugh Hudson ., where he played the Jewish sprinter Harold Abrahams who fought to overcome anti-Semitism and triumph in the 1924 Olympic Games. The film won four Academy Awards although he did not get the coveted nomination. “The film changed my career. Suddenly I received offers from all over the world, and after decades of acting, none of my work has had a similar relevance,” he recalled in an interview.
He preferred to continue dedicating himself above all to the scene, although he occasionally appeared in the cinema, in titles such as The First Knight or The Last Trip of Robert Rylands , by the Spanish Gracia Querejeta . In his country, his work as Prince Charles in the telefilm Guillermo y Kate had a great impact. A true story , and he became a terrorist in An Everyman . In 2008 he played Sarek, father of Dr. Spok, in JJ Abrams ‘ Star Trek . After his death, Ben Cross leaves the thriller The Devil’s Light pending release , and the Netflix romantic drama Last Letter From Your Lover .
She is survived by her two children, Theo and Lauren .
