Barbra Streisand, born Barbara Joan Streisand, is an American actress, singer, director, writer, songwriter, producer, designer, author, photographer, and activist. She was born on April 24, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York, to Diana and Emanuel Streisand.

Barbra is a daughter of Diana née “Ida Rosen” and Emmanuel Streisand. Her mother was a soprano singer in her youth and considered a career in music, but later became a school secretary. Her father was a high school teacher at the same school where he first met Barbra’s mother.
Barbra has an older brother, Sheldon, and a half-sister, singer Roslyn Kind, from her mother’s remarriage to Louis Kind in 1949. Roslyn is nine years younger than Streisand.

Barbra has been married twice. In 1963, she married Elliott Gould, but their marriage ended in 1971. In 1969, she dated Canadian Prime Minister “Pierre Trudeau”. In 1974 she began a relationship with hairstylist/producer Jon Peters and Peters continued and became her manager and producer.
In the early 90s, Barbra was dating tennis champion “Andre Agassi. On July 1, 1998, she married her second husband, American actor, producer and director James Brolin.

Streisand began his studies at the Orthodox Jewish Yeshiva in Brooklyn at the age of five. She then entered Public School 89 in Brooklyn. She attended Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn in 1955 where she became an honor student in modern history, English, and Spanish. She also joined the Freshman Chorus and Choral Club, where she sang with fellow choir member and classmate, Neil Diamond.
In the summer of 1957, she had her first stage experience as a walk-on at the Playhouse in Malden Bridge, New York. This small part was followed by a role of little sister in Picnic and another of vampire in Desk Set. When she was a senior, she rehearsed for a small role in Driftwood, a play staged in a downtown attic. She graduated from Erasmus Hall in January 1959 and immediately tried to get roles on the New York stage.
In 1960, she took a job as an usher at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater for The Sound of Music. In August 1960, auditions for the Bon Soir nightclub. Besides the ‘Bon Soir nightclub’, she frequented several other nightclubs.
In 1961, Barbra first appeared on television on ‘The Tonight Show’. Later in 1961, she was cast in Another Evening with Harry Stoones. She became a regular on PM East/PM West, a talk/variety series hosted by Mike Wallace and Joyce Davidson
In May 1962, Streisand appeared on the Garry Moore Show where she first sang ‘Happy Days Are Here Again’. His sad, slow take on the upbeat 1930s Democratic Party theme song became his signature song during this early phase of his career. In 1963, her debut album, “The Barbra Streisand Album,” made her top 10 on the chart.
Barbra Streisand is the only artist to have received Oscars, Tony, Emmy, Grammy, Directors Guild of America, Golden Globe, National Medal of Arts and Peabody Awards and France’s Legion d’Honneur as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award. She is also the first female director to receive the Kennedy Center Honors. In 2015, President Barack Obama presented him with America’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
She won Oscars for Best Actress (“Funny Girl”) and Best Original Song (for her composition of “Evergreen” which has since become a standard.) She was also nominated for Best Actress for “The Way We Were». The three films she directed received 14 Oscar nominations. His recordings have won him ten Grammy Awards, including Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement and Legend Awards.
She is now also the only recording artist or group to have reached number one in the album charts in each of six consecutive decades. She has eleven in total. Her last two studio albums, her 2016 Grammy-nominated Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway album and her 2014 Grammy-nominated album Partners, entered the Billboard 200 at No. #1 albums in history: over 52 years old.
