Barack Obama was the 44th President of the United States. He served for eight years from January 20, 2009 to January 20, 2017 (he was re-elected president in 2013 by defeating Mitt Romney). He was the first African American President of the United States. Before becoming President of the United States, he was a United States Senator from Illinois for nearly four years from January 2005 to November 2008. Prior to that, he served as a member of the Illinois State Senate from January 1997 to November 2004.
