Life and Education
Babajide Sanwo Olu was born on June 25, 1965, in Lagos State, which is located in Nigeria’s southwestern area. He is also from Lagos State, specifically the Lagos Island Local Government Area. He comes from a Christian family. Babajide Sanwo-Olu is married to Dr Ibijioke Sanwo Olu, and they have four children.
Hon. Babajide Sanwo Olu has an excellent educational background. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Banking and Finance and a Master’s degree in Surveying from the University of Lagos, Lagos State, Nigeria, which he attended from 1988 to 1998. Banking Career
Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu was the treasurer at the old Lead Merchant Bank from 1994 to 1997, after which he became the head of the foreign money market at United Bank for Africa. He then worked as a deputy general manager and divisional director for First Inland Bank, Plc (now First City Monument Bank). Public Service Career
Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu began his political career in 2003 when he was appointed as a Special Adviser on Corporate Matters to Femi Pedro, the then-Deputy Governor of Lagos State. He was thereafter assigned as the interim Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget until 2007. Then, he was appointed as the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry by then-Governor Bola Tinubu. Following the 2007 General Elections, Governor Babatunde Fashola named Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu as Commissioner for Establishments, Training, and Pensions. In 2016, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode appointed Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu as Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC).
His major public-sector accomplishments include overseeing privatisation programs at the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE). He founded and served as the Pioneer Board Chairman of the Lagos Security Trust Fund. Following his orders, the LAGBUS System and the Control & Command Centre in Alausa Ikeja were also constructed.
Political Career
Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu publicly stated his desire to run for governor of Lagos State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on September 16, 2018. Making him a major competitor to incumbent governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
His declaration was supported by major stakeholders in Lagos State politics, including the Governor’s Advisory Council of the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress and members of the Lagos State House of Assembly. This prompted Dr Obafemi Hamzat, a governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress APC in Lagos, to withdraw from the gubernatorial race.
On October 2, 2018, he won the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primary in Lagos. At the APC flag-off campaign rally on January 8, 2019, Lagos Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and 63 political parties endorsed Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s candidacy. In the long run, Sanwo-Olu was elected Governor of Lagos State by a landslide victory over his opponent, Jimi Agbaje, in the 2019 Lagos State General Elections, which were held on March 9, 2019. On Wednesday, May 29, 2019, he was sworn in as the 15th Governor of Lagos State at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) on Lagos Island.
He has been involved in several developmental projects, one of which includes road construction in important parts of Lagos state. Sanwo-Olu recently requested that the Fela Kuti statue erected by Akinwunmi Ambode be removed from Allen Avenue in Ikeja in order to alleviate traffic congestion in the area. The statue, however, is reported to have been relocated to a more convenient location in Lagos state. In 2020, the Governor dedicated the Oshodi-Abule-Egba BRT Lane, among other projects.
