BR Chopra’s name is quite unknown internationally. However, his films were a hit in his native India, and he is considered one of the greats of Bollywood’s golden age. He mostly specialized in musicals, but also shot social dramas and TV series. The filmmaker died on November 5 at his Bombay residence, after a long illness, at the age of 94.

Baldev Raj Chopra was born on April 22, 1914 in Ludiana (Punjad), into a middle-class family. He studied English literature at the University of Lahore, in the years before the separation of India and Pakistan. When he finished he took an exam to work in the civil service, but because he failed he ended up becoming a film journalist, and became editor of the ‘Cinema Herald’ magazine, which was very successful in the late 1930s in India. . His greatest dream was to direct his own film, for which he asked his father’s friends for help. When he was about to achieve it, the partition of India occurred, and Chopra had to move along with all the members of his large family to New Delhi. When his father died suddenly, BR was the only income earner for the clan, made up of about twenty-five people, including brothers, nephews, etc. He finally got money for his first film,Karwat , from 1949, but it was not very successful, so Chopra ended up bankrupt, and to recover she had to return to journalism.

In 1951 he produced and directed his second work, Afsana , a thriller that did much better at the box office. He founded his own production company, BR Films, with which he produced numerous films. Among his films, Naya Daur stands out , a musical about the arrival of new technologies in agricultural areas that was all the rage. He was also the director of Kanoon , Gumrah , Dastaan and Karm , which had a large audience in his country but hardly crossed the borders.

The filmmaker belonged to a very cinematographic family, since both his brother Yash Chopra, as well as his son Ravi and his nephew Aditya are also dedicated to directing. His funeral was massive and was attended by distinguished representatives of the Bollywood industry.
