Aunjanue Ellis was born on February 21, 1969 in San Francisco, California, United States. She was raised on her grandmother’s farm in McComb, Mississippi.
Aunjanue Ellis attended Tougaloo College and completed her BA in African American Studies from Brown University. While she was attending her bachelor’s degree, she was also involved in acting. She made her debut in the student play while studying at the University.
She then studied acting in the Graduate Program in Acting at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta.
