In this post, RNN discusses some of the attempts by Nigerians to break the Guinness World Records in 2023. Let us note that most of these attempts were during Hilda Baci‘s attempt and after Hilda Baci received recognition in the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking time.
Guinness World Records is a renowned authority on record-breaking achievements and it has captivated the attention of Nigerians. Excitement is brewing as they set their sights on breaking myriad records. With unwavering determination, Nigerians are eager to make history in various categories.
According to Guinness World Records at some point, they had received up to 1,500 applications from Nigerians in just two months.
The Cook-a-thon Epidemic
The entire obsession with the World Guinness Record, by Nigerian, began when the now-renowned Nigerian Chef, announced she would be attempting the record for the longest cooking marathon.
She started her record attempt titled “Cook-a-thon” on 11 May 2023, She broke the record, hitting 87 hours 50 minutes above the previous record holder in 2019.
Hilda’s record attempt generated a lot of buzz on Social media. She was also visited by high-profile Nigerians Such as the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu; Lead Pastor of Harvester International, Bolaji Idowu; Nigerian award-winning singer, Tiwa Savage, Tim Godfrey, Ice Prince.
Following Hilda’s successful record attempt, Chef Damilola Adeparusi, a student from Ekiti state, announced her own cook-a-thon. However, a video surfaced online in which she requested financial assistance, contradicting claims that she had millions in her account following her 120-hour cooking marathon.
Following suit, another Nigerian chef named Adeyeye Adeola expressed her aim to break Baci’s record. She took to Twitter, stating her intention to cook for 150 hours in order to surpass Chef Baci’s achievement.
Further records Epidemic
Things got further complicated when a lecturer at Ekiti State University, Joshua Hassan attempted to surpass the 144-hour lecture record set by an Indian lecturer named Francis Joseph in 2016. Francis Joseph secured the title after surpassing Arvind Mishra, an assistant mechanical engineering professor at Graphic Era University in Dehradun, India, who lectured for 139 hours, 42 minutes, and 56 seconds in 2014.
Nigerian comedian Woli Arole also joined the trend, announcing his plan to break a Guinness World Record by initiating a 5000-hour prayer marathon, aiming to surpass the record for the longest continuous prayer time.
Furthermore, a painter and 2D artist named Oyinlola is aspiring to break the Guinness World Record for the longest painting marathon. The record is currently held by Ronald Palmaerts, who painted for 60 consecutive hours in 2013.
Nigerian Lady, Joyce Ijeoma also attempted to set a 72-hour Guinness World Record for the longest massage on different individuals in Lekki, Lagos State. Alastair Galpin who is the 2nd biggest Guinness World Record breaker of the 2000s decade, after breaking 38 World Records, currently holds the record for the longest full-body massage in 25 hours and 4 minutes, which was held in South Kalimantan, Indonesia in November 2015.
The Bizarre Guinness World Records Pandemic
A student from Ekiti state also attempted a film-watching marathon for 121 hours to break the Guinness World Record. If he successfully breaks the record, he will be the first Nigerian to set the record.
A Nigerian man named Tembu Ebere embarked on a crying challenge in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest crying marathon by an individual.
A resident of Ekiti state who identified himself as “Sugartee” attempted the longest kissing session but he was stopped by the state government, which called it “unhealthy and immoral”.
Also, a Lagos-based gospel singer Oluwatobi Kufeji attempted singing for 200 hours to help boost his career. “Hopefully by God’s grace there will be a meaningful deal that will give my music a major boost,” said the 39-year-old father of two during a two-hour break.
Furthermore, a Nigerian named Christopher Bayode Olusa delivered a speech for 30 hours in his quest to break the Guinness World Record for the longest speech marathon by an individual.
A lady from Ibadan, Oyo State with the name Eniola Fagbemi also attempted to set a Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest agbo (herbs) cooking time.
The latest attempt is by Enitan Subair, a student of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Osun State, who commenced a 50-hour hand wash-a-thon on Friday 24th of November 2023 to set a new Guinness World Record.
