Atiku Slams VDM’s Arrest, Accuses Tinubu Govt of Silencing Critics

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the arrest and continued detention of social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, calling it a troubling show of political intimidation by the Bola Tinubu administration.

Otse was taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over multiple petitions alleging cyberstalking. However, days after his arrest, no formal charges have been filed, sparking widespread protests in Abuja, especially among young Nigerians demanding his release.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Atiku didn’t mince words. He accused the Tinubu government of weaponizing law enforcement agencies against dissenters and critics.

“This is yet another clear abuse of power. VeryDarkMan’s arrest and prolonged detention without charge reflect a disturbing pattern of political repression,” he wrote.

Atiku said the continued clampdown on voices critical of the government is eroding the country’s democratic values. “It’s alarming that he remains behind bars without formal charges. It’s a blatant violation of his rights and an example of creeping authoritarianism.”

He also criticized what he called “selective justice,” pointing out that those close to the government with corruption allegations are often left untouched, while critics are swiftly targeted.

“The Tinubu administration’s actions against opposition voices are disgraceful. Nigerians must not accept a democracy where fear replaces free speech,” he warned.
