In this article we will discuss ASUU strike and its effect on Nigeria students; over the years, the normal academic calendar of Nigerian universities had hardly ever been devoid of hitches. This, however, has been occasioned by the lingering ASUU strike in most federal and state universities; to the aggrieved lecturers, this is as a result of the irresponsibility and negligence of the government.

On March this year, ASUU began a nationwide strike to call on the government to remove the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS). To them, this system does not favour the lecturers has it breeds exploitation. As a solution to this, the lecturers proposed the University Transparency Accountability Solutions (UTAS). Although,  series of meetings have been held to test the integrity of this system, no yield whatsoever.

Perhaps the government feels the sector has little contribution to the economic development of the country. However, at the losers end, are the innocent students in this impasse. We have seen continued disruption of the academic calendar of students, thereby frustrating their efforts. However, as we said earlier, we will discuss the ASUU strike and its effect on Nigeria students.

ASUU Strike and Its Effect on Nigeria Students Performances

  1. Increase in Crime Rate:

With no doubt, the lingering strike has created a vacuum for more crisis to usurp the country. Although, we will not say the #EndSARS protest, for example, is a criminal attempt, students have been used has vanguards for corruption. Most of them have been used to disrupt the peaceful protest by Nigerians; even on streets, we saw teenagers who suppose to be in school after the COVID-19 pandemic, maiming and killing. The strike in coalition with the pandemic has created a nightmare we can never forget.

2. Lack Of Interest In Continuing Their Programme:

As a result of the lingering strike, students have secured another means of survival and have lost interest in continuing their programmes. We have seen how students on Twitter said, ASUU should just pause first o, let me use this strike to earn money o, by the way, who school help sef. To us, these are angry words that reflect the state of Nigeria educational system. Most of them now enjoy huge salaries they might not receive after school, with such have jilt schooling; therefore, they will never wish the strike to be called off.

3. Poor Academic Performances:

No doubt the resumption of students to school even after the strike actions will produce poor academic performances. Most of them during this period hardly read their books; however, it is left for the universities management to be lenient with their academic sessions.

4. Lack of Interest In Nigeria Edu-System:

The most dangerous straw that broke the camel’s back is that majority of students have lost interest in Nigeria educational system; thereby travelling abroad to complete their degrees. To us, this is absolutely brain drain which may be dangerous to the economy of this country.
