Army Arrests Soldier Following Protester's Death in Kaduna
The Nigerian Army has taken swift action following the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy, Ismail Mohammed, in Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State, on Tuesday.
A soldier attempting to disperse a mob of hoodlums accidentally fired a warning shot that led to the teenager’s death.
According to a statement by the Director, of Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the troops responded to a distress call about the hoodlums, who were burning tyres and pelting stones at security personnel.
The soldier involved in the shooting has been arrested and is currently undergoing interrogation.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has expressed sadness over the incident and sent a delegation to condole with the deceased’s family. The delegation, led by Maj.-Gen. Lander Saraso attended the burial of Ismail Mohammed, which was conducted according to Islamic rites.
The Nigerian Army’s prompt response and actions demonstrate a commitment to accountability and transparency in this unfortunate incident.
