Arlene Francis was an American actress, radio and television host, and game show panelist. She is known for her longtime role as a panelist on the game show What’s My Line? on which she appeared regularly for 25 years, from 1950 to 1975 on network and syndicated versions of the show.

ARLENE FRANCIS EARLY LIFE

Francis was born October 20, 1907 in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of Leah (née Davis) and Aram Kazanjian. His Armenian father was studying art in Paris at age 16 when he learned that both his parents had died in one of the Hamidian massacres perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire in Anatolia between 1894 and 1896

He emigrated to the United States and became a portrait photographer, opening his own studio in Boston at the beginning of the 20th century. Later in life, Kazanjian painted canvases of dogwood trees, “rabbits in flight”, and other nature scenes, selling them at auction in New York.

When Francis was seven, his father decided the opportunities were greater in New York and moved the family to an apartment in Washington Heights, Manhattan. Francis remained a New Yorker until her son moved her to a nursing home in San Francisco in 1995

From the archives: Arlene Francis; Sparkling spirit of old television

Arlene Francis, the actress and TV personality who was perhaps best known as a regular panelist on the longtime “What’s My Line?” quiz show, has died. She was 93 years old.

Francis died of natural causes Thursday afternoon at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco.

At a time when TV personalities, especially women, were expected to bubble up, Francis did just that. With a ready smile and a sharp wit, she was what one TV reporter called “femininely gay,” a quality that helped her become one of the busiest celebrities on the small screen in the 1950s and 60. In addition to ‘What’s My Line?’, she has hosted two shows, ‘Home’, a magazine-style show that followed NBC’s ‘Today’, and ‘Talent Patrol’, a ABC variety show hosted by members of the military.

Francis was also in a number of films. She was a member of Orson Welles’ Mercury Theater company when she met her second husband, actor Martin Gabel. They had one son, Peter, who survives him.

Born Arline Francis Kazanjian in Boston, the daughter of a noted portrait photographer, Arlene Francis exhibited a theatrical bent while attending a Catholic school for girls. Her parents discouraged her from a performing career, instead sending her to an exclusive finishing school in New York City. They even tried to set him up as a boutique owner on Madison Avenue, but the boutique was little more than a gathering place for his friends and closed within a year.

Before long, Francis dropped his last name, changed the spelling of his first name, and headed to Hollywood. His first film appearance was a small pie role clashing with Bela Lugosi in “Murders in the Rue Morgue.” She went on to appear in ‘Stage Door Canteen’, ‘All My Sons’, ‘One, Two, Three’ and ‘The Thrill of It All.’

After her first film, she also began a career in radio, appearing on “45 Minutes in Hollywood,” doing impersonations of stage and film personalities. She was said to be a fan of Greta Garbo’s vocal quirks and mannerisms.

Its success led to other work, including appearances on the radio shows “March of Time” and “Cavalcade of America.” She appeared on radio shows featuring Jack Benny, George Burns and Gracie Allen, and Fred Allen. She hosted a radio show, ‘Blind Date’, and was the first woman to host a game show when ‘Blind Date’ went on ABC in 1949.

As her radio career continued to flourish, she found roles on Broadway, debuting in ‘One Good Year’ in 1936, and had her first major role two years later in ‘All That Glitters’. The same year, she appeared with Welles and Joseph Cotten in “Danton’s Death”, a Mercury Theater production. Other notable appearances include a role in Maxwell Anderson’s “Journey to Jerusalem” in 1940.

Her major Broadway hit was a 1942 production of a Joseph Fields comedy, “The Doughgirls,” in which she appeared as a Russian sniper. She played the role for a year and a half, and Look magazine reported that “she left with the show.”

Despite her radio, stage and film successes, she will likely be remembered as one of the regular panelists on “What’s My Line?”, the longest-running game show in network television history in the United States. prime time. Francis joined the program on its second TV show and remained with it for the next 17 years. Hosted by John Daly, the show included panelists Bennett Cerf, Fred Allen and Dorothy Kilgallen. After Allen and Kilgallen died, the remaining regulars were joined by celebrity panelists.

Despite her effervescent character on television, her life has not been without tragedy. In 1963, Francis had an automobile accident on a rain-swept highway, killing a motorist in another vehicle. Francis suffered a concussion and a fractured shoulder. Three years earlier, a dumbbell supporting a window of his Manhattan apartment fell eight stories, killing a Detroit tourist who was in New York to celebrate his 60th birthday.

In 1988, a thief ripped off her diamond-shaped necklace as she walked down Lexington Avenue in New York City.

Her 10-year marriage to her first husband, Neil Agnew, ended in divorce in 1945. She married Gabel a year later and the couple remained married until his death in 1986.
