Antonio Larreta

The prestigious Uruguayan writer Antonio Larreta died in Montevideo at the age of 92 on August 19, 2015, as a result of cancer. Creator of the series “Curro Jiménez”, he also participated in scripts for various films, such as “Los santos inocentes”.

Born on December 14, 1922 in Montevideo, Gualberto José Antonio Rodríguez Larreta Ferreira worked as a film and theater critic in his country for more than a decade. He also founded the Club de Teatro group, a company he directed in various classics. At the beginning of the 1960s, he staged in Spain Lope de Vega’s play “Perfiar until you die”, with which he won the Larra Prize.

During the Uruguayan civic-military dictatorship, which lasted between 1973 and 1985, he went into exile in Spain. There he met the actor Sancho Gracia , whom he knew because he had spent his childhood in Montevideo. He created the series Curro Jiménez for him , which was one of the great successes of Spanish television.

As a screenwriter, he collaborated on titles such as Los santos inocentes , Las cosas del querer or El maestro de esgrima , for which he won the Goya for best adapted screenplay. With the arrival of democracy in his country, he decided to return and made his directorial debut with I was never in Vienna , starring his compatriot China Zorrilla .

In 1980 he won the Premio Planeta with “Volavérunt”, which later gave rise to a criticized film adaptation. The multifaceted Antonio Larreta worked as an actor in films such as La ventana , by Argentine Carlos Sorín .
