HELPING HAND: We love ‘The Good Doctor’, it’s such an amazing show. Have you had a favorite moment from Season 2 so far?
ANTONIA THOMAS : That’s a very difficult question because the scripts this year have been very good. The scripts for Season 1 were also amazing, but the storylines as they come out get better and better and more exciting each time. That’s a really boring answer, but I have to say I don’t have a favorite moment. Every day on set is so much fun, and off the top of my head, I can’t think of a single one!

CDM: Claire is told at the start of this season that she needs to be assertive, but struggles with the fear of being called a ‘bitch’ for her assertiveness in the workplace, which is a very clarifies the concern of many women being “bossy” at work. Do you think it’s important for these kinds of real-life stories to be played out on TV to help women feel connected? That they are not alone?
ANTONY:Absolutely. I think that’s really important. I think that’s something that the writers of ‘The Good Doctor’ usually do very, very well – in the first season they touched on this idea of sexual harassment in the workplace, it was extremely timely when it came out, and I think it’s so important for us to portray this issue on screen, and likewise with this. I, myself, identify a lot with the plot of needing to be more assertive and being told that I should be more assertive in what I want. I feel like I’m constantly juggling this thing of wanting to be assertive, but not too assertive, and what does it mean to be too assertive? And not wanting to step on your toes, and being afraid to sound too energetic, and then to to be labeled in a certain way because she is a woman. I think it’s really important, especially now, that we have these conversations and people can watch them and hopefully identify them.

CDM: Your character Claire is so multi-dimensional – what’s it like to play a character like her?
ANTONY:It’s incredible. I feel extremely lucky – that was one of the main reasons I was drawn to the role. She has so many layers with her, she’s incredibly smart and really good at her job, but she has a huge heart and is really good at nurturing patient relationships, but in her personal life, she’s totally closed off and doesn’t know not how to do. relate personally to people when it comes to herself. Being able to play this contradictory stuff is so exciting, and I feel so lucky and excited, to be honest, every time a script comes out because for Claire, it’s always complicated.

CDM: We interviewed Freddie Highmore about the show when he came to New Zealand earlier this year, and we talked a bit about his character Shaun Murphy’s optimism and how refreshing he is to see a series and a character like that. Do you think it’s important for television to present these different stories and perspectives?
ANTONY:Yeah, I think that’s really important. I totally agree I think optimism is one of the main reasons people really identify with the show because there’s so much going on in the big world right now that’s negative, depressing and dark, so to be able to watch our show – what’s not sweet is not that it’s all too positive, it deals with really tough issues, and most of the time things don’t things go wrong, things go wrong, people die every day – and being able to put a positive spin on a lot of these things is really important. I hope that’s why viewers love the show, they want to turn on the TV and see something
CDM: There are so many horrible things happening in the real world, it’s nice to see something fictional that’s different.
ANTONY: Exactly.
