With a bony physique, he specialized in playing villains’ henchmen. Anthony James passed away on May 26, 2020 in Massachusetts, his family announced.

Born on July 22, 1942, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, his real name was James Anthony, but for his stage name he changed his first and last names in order. His childhood was marked by the early death of his parent, which forced his mother to work long hours as a domestic helper, in order to pay for the boy’s drama studies.

He made his debut in 1967 as the racist shop assistant who complicated Sidney Poitier’s life, in Norman Jewison ‘s In the Heat of the Night . The film won five Oscars, including the one for the highest category. Subsequently, Anthony James  lavished himself in the field of series, appearing in titles such as Gunsmoke , and continued to shoot feature films such as Courage, Sweat and Gunpowder and The Little Aliens at a good pace . Clint Eastwood signed him for Hell of Cowards , and many years later as Skinny, an unscrupulous pimp, in Unforgiven .

It was his last role, in a film that curiously also has the Oscar for best film. In 1992 she left the cinema to dedicate herself to painting, his other great passion. More information about his private life is unknown.
