INTERVIEW WITH ANJELAH JOHNSON
Par: Sean L. McCarthy
Dates: May 5, 2010
INTERVIEW: ANJELAH JOHNSON IS A GOOD CHRISTIAN GIRL WHO WAS GROWN UP ON COMEDY GOING VIRAL. NOW WHAT?
I knew our interview would be delayed because you tweeted @anjelahjohnson that you were hiking. How much do you use Twitter for fun and how much can you build your fan base as a comedian? “I haven’t really thought about it, what is my purpose. I love being able to express myself right now… sometimes you drive down the street and see something crazy and want to call someone, but it’s not really worth making a call. This way you can send an immediate call to everyone. You can enjoy it, or not, but no one has been bothered by a phone call with it. I can say, hey, look at me on Lopez Tonight. It’s funny. VS’ is a really useful tool for what I do. ‘
How old were you when you first thought of acting as a career?“24, I guess. It was like five years ago that I started doing comedy. Even at first, I didn’t think of it as a career. I thought of it as something fun and something I was good at – oh wait a minute, this could actually be a career. You started with an improvisation class, didn’t you? “I took an improv class at my church. Every Tuesday night they do a creative arts function at church, acting, singing, art, everything… I know I had friends in the class. I don’t even know what pushed me to go in this direction. They had drama class. I was in there, and then they said we had an improv class, okay, I’ll try. ‘
It almost feels like you fell into it. Did you have any previous comedy ambitions? “Before, I was constantly watching BET comics. My mom didn’t like us watching her because of all the language, dirty content. Even then I didn’t think about it, it was just something fun to watch and listen to. Then at university, I took courses in communication and speech. I always knew that when I stood up to speak I would make people laugh, so I was never worried about my lack of preparation because I knew I could make people laugh. You know, I think I’ve been doing this for a long time and I didn’t even know it. ‘
Only two years after doing stand-up, you had two huge bits on YouTube. What’s your take now on the joys and pitfalls of notoriety in your routines?Do you think you always have to do “Bon Qui Qui” and “Nail Salon” at every show? “I think it’s a joy, above all. Now that I have my Comedy Central (special) and people have seen my material… most of the people who come have come because they saw this material on the internet. It’s like seeing your favorite band and they’re not singing that song you play in your car all the time. The reaction I get is very rewarding. But I’m exhausted from the joke itself, and yet if I take it back and don’t do it, people start screaming at the end of the show. I just have to be grateful.
now. It got to the point where I do the nail salon bit and people start yelling “Bon Qui Qui” in the middle. I think, you want me to do all my songs at the same time?I completely understand, but it’s frustrating. I think it will just get to a point where most of my material is so fresh and new that they don’t think about the old stuff. They’re just, oh, that’s great, that’s great. I’m definitely not there yet. I definitely take my time and live my life and the stories I tell are personal to my life. I want to tell them my way and not just spit them out… also a fear of failure. If I say it now, sometimes I’ll be scared if he doesn’t get a good response right away and I say I won’t say it again, but then I’ll think it’s new and I have to work on it. The pressure to write new material that lives up to the “nail salon” and the “good who who”…just do it. It’s definitely a fight for me. »
One thing that wasn’t a problem was your recent appearance on Lopez Tonight. It seems like a hotter crowd than any other live TV studio audience. Roll the clip!
How was this concert? “Even in interviews they scream like crazy. I noticed this and knew that to get in I had to cut my gear in half as most of the time was going to be filled with cheers and applause. Even planning my joke, cheering on the Raiders, there’s no questions in this set because you’re just asking for trouble, so I just cut to the chase…but as soon as you say Oakland Raiders , you ask someone’s opinion. They were excited, which is great. Because they were already on your side.
As a devoted Christian working in comedy clubs, do you ever feel like a “good girl” surrounded by quintessential “bad boys” trying to tempt you to the dark side? “I guess that’s where my focus is at the moment, if I’m just looking to hang out and have fun, it’s easier to be tempted by the men around me. But if I’m thinking of pursuing a serious relationship, then it’s less of a temptation, because I know
there are those moments when I am tempted. Even though I have the good girl logo on me. I am absolutely not perfect. For me personally, I don’t have that with my fans or my fanbase. I think it’s different for a girl going there. I don’t even think about meeting a fan after a show. I surround myself with other comedians that I know and trust, they’re not going to hit me, he’s a good friend. I love working with Nate Bargatze. He’s a lovely comedian and a funny human being, I know he’s married and loves his wife. I know there is no temptation there. It really depends on my focus at the moment.
Do you feel the need to elevate or defend your Christianity as a stand-up? I’m not talking about it in any way. But I laugh at myself in every aspect of my life, but not in a preachy way. I’m talking about me and I’m a Christian, so it’s going to come back.
Do you worry about the perception that Christians (or other devout people in their religion) may not have the best sense of humor?Comedians love to poke fun at Christian rock, and I know you guys have a bit about Christian rappers. No, I don’t. I do not care. I’m sure there are Christians who don’t have a personality. But that’s not who I am. I’m a Christian and it’s possible to have an awesome personality and sense of humor. There are stuffy people. We have our Christian rock and our Christian rap. I haven’t really heard any Buddhist rock or Buddhist rap. And some of it is corny. There are songs that I listen to and think, oh that’s awful. Just because there’s Christian music doesn’t mean I listen to it. I’m just me, I’m just Anjelah, I do stand-up comedy, I’m an actress, I’m a Christian, I’m a sister, I’m a girl. I’m not trying to tell the girls in my stand-up to be the best girls we can be. I am just me. I am not on a crusade in any way. I’m just standing here and saying here’s a few things about me. ‘
So what’s next for you? I know you also have a role in the summer movie, Marmaduke. What else is on tap? “To publicize my DVD, my tour dates, now that the pilot season is over in LA I’m just working on new material and hitting the road again. When it comes to film and TV, I’m so lucky to do what I’m going to do, I never know when the next opportunity will come, but I’m grateful when it does. I keep trying to grow and grow. I’m trying to progress, so when the next opportunity comes, I’ll be prepared for it. ‘
