The actress Anita Page, star of the last years of silent films, passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2008, at her home in Nuys, northeast of Los Angeles. She was 98 years old, and she was one of the last survivors of the first Oscar ceremony. She for some time rivaled in popularity with Greta Garbo herself.

Born on August 4, 1910 in Flushing (New York), Anita Pomares belonged to a humble family. Her father was a driver and her mother her secretary. When she was fifteen years old, she received a recommendation to be hired as an actress at MGM, by some friends of hers, relatives of Betty Bronson , an actress who was beginning to be very popular. Hired by these studios, she changed her name to Anita Page, and made her debut with a small role in A Kiss for Cinderella , an adaptation of a work by JM Barrie , the creator of Peter Pan. comedy drama From Millionaire to Journalist and the drama The Flying Fleet , in which Ramon Novarrohe played an army aviator. He started to become popular with Modern Virgins , where he also played one of his first roles as the mythical Joan Crawford . Both played young maidens.

With the advent of sound, many actresses had to retire, but Page continued to be active. She was one of the leads in Broadway’s The Melody , the first Oscar winner for best picture. She shared the screen with Buster Keaton , in  Estrellados (1930) and with Clark Gable , in The Sinner(1931). At this time she was one of the MGM actresses receiving the most fan mail. It is said that she had Benito Mussolini himself as a suitor. Thus, it is not very clear why she opted for her withdrawal, when she was at the top, just when she ended her exclusive contract with MGM. In an interview in 2004, she clarified that she had problems with the head of the studio, Irving Thalberg, who harassed her to unbearable limits, and that he and his partner Louis B. Mayer made sure that she was not hired by other production companies. The truth is that she decided to dedicate her life to her family, after marrying the composer Nacio Herb Brown. The marriage dissolved in 1935, and Page remarried, with Herschel House, an officer in the United States Navy, with whom she had two daughters.

In 1996, the actress decided to return to the cinema, although she had been sixty years retired, and had only appeared briefly in Saint Mike , from 1963. She played a supporting role in the B- movie Sunset After Dark . She soon after played a nun in Witchcraft XI: Sisters in Blood , another low-budget horror film. She then took part in a couple more titles, very similar, and has even left an unpublished tape, titled Frankenstein Rising , still pending release.
