Rockwood was involved in a car accident September 3, 2001 on California’s Interstate 5 freeway between San Francisco and Los Angeles over a Labor Day weekend. It happened as they were returning late at night from visiting her bridesmaid for her upcoming wedding to Dustin Nguyen, when the driver (also one of her bridesmaids) lost Control.
The car diverged into the roadside rock face, flipped over, hit the guardrail and plunged down an embankment. Vietnamese actress Thuy Trang (then 27) was tragically killed in the accident after suffering internal injuries.
Rockwood was thrown from the vehicle through a window before its final impact and was left quadriplegic.Doctors gave him a 3% chance of regaining his motor skills and feeling under his neck. However, thanks to physiotherapy, she regained partial movement of her left index finger two months after the accident. Three months after the accident, she could touch the top of her head. In 2003, Rockwood received stem cell treatments in Portugal which allowed him to use a manual wheelchair.
