Andy Roddick worked with coach Doug Spreen during his time as a tennis pro. Doug has helped Andy manage his training, leaving him vulnerable to minor injuries. Andy’s training focused primarily on strengthening his shoulders and core muscles.
Here are the 3 main exercises that were part of Andy Roddick’s training routine:
- Stability Ball Crunch – With legs plating on the floor, lie on a medium-sized stability ball. Place your hands behind your head or in front of your chest and slowly lift your shoulder and back off the ball as you would a regular crunch. Perform the process for 3 sets of 20 reps.
- Tummy tuck – Lie on the floor with your hands by your sides, or under your buttocks. Lift feet off the floor together and without touching the floor, raise feet a few more inches and return to starting point. Do 3 sets of 20 repetitions each.
- External rotation – Sit with one leg on the bench and the other firmly on the floor. Bend leg at knee to support one hand. Now take a dumbbell of a comfortable weight and hold it with a bent elbow. Extend the arm with the dumbbell while keeping the elbow locked. Hold the arm and lower it again. Do 3 sets of 10 reps each.
Aside from that, Andy worked on endurance training, 30, 40, 60 meter sprints (8 each) followed by 5 or 6 300s (300 meters) the next day. As part of his leg workouts, he also does bunny hops, drills, lunges, and squat jumps.
As for his diet, Andy has been consuming more protein and vegetables, reducing or completely stopping carbohydrate intake during exercise. He also drank plenty of electrolyte-fortified water to stay hydrated during game season.
