Australian Andrew Lesnie, cinematographer of “The Lord of the Rings”, died unexpectedly on April 27, 2015, as a result of a heart attack. He was only 59 years old. “The master of light, the genius Andrew Lesnie, has passed away”, commented Russell Crowe, who had the late filmmaker for his directorial debut, “The master of water”, recently released in Spain, and which has meant his last movie.

Born in 1956 in Sydney, he graduated in 1979 from the Australian Film Television and Radio School. He started out as a cameraman for children’s television shows, where it seemed he had the chance to develop his skills with few restrictions.

After working as a cinematographer on television series and some documentaries, he made his feature film debut with the unknown production of his country, Fantasy Man . The film that gave it international relevance was Babe, the brave little pig , although its sequel, Babe 2, a little pig in the city , also had a huge impact .

Right after that he embarked on the Peter Jackson adventure of adapting JRR Tolkien ‘s best-known work for film in New Zealand. Curiously, during this time she also launched into acting, as she starred in the short The Long and Short of It , directed by Sean Astin , one of the cast members of Jackson’s trilogy.

For The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring won the Oscar for Best Cinematography, one of the four technical awards the film received. Interestingly, when the last chapter, The Return of the King , received 11 Academy Awards becoming the great winner of 2004, he had not even been nominated.

Jackson recruited him again for his next jobs, King Kong , The Lovely Bones , and all three The Hobbit tapes . In his filmography, titles such as I am legend , Shine a Light or The origin of the planet of the apes also stand out .
