He was chosen the 53rd mayor of Columbus on November 3, 2015, succeeding Mayor Michael B. Coleman who was the longest serving mayor in Columbus history. Ginther and Democrat Zach Scott, the former sheriff of Franklin County, Ohio, were chosen in March 2015, in a key political decision by Columbus voters to enter the November 2015 broad political race to oust the resigning mayor of Columbus, Michael B. Coleman (D). On November 3, 2015, in the general political race, Ginther crushed Scott with 59% of the vote.
Speaker Ginther most recently served on the Columbus City Council from 2007 to 2015 and served as leader of the council from 2011 until he waited for mayor on January 1, 2016. In 2019, Ginther was reappointed unopposed as civic president of Columbus. During his State of the City address in February 2020, he declared activities to improve the Sullivant Avenue lobby in Franklinton and at the top of the hill. Mayors oversee a city’s fundamental offices, including police, fire, education, housing, and transportation. At the same time, their obligations differ depending on the power structure of the neighborhood.
