  • On March 20, 2008, at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, Ward defeated Rubin Williams by TKO in the seventh round. Ward hit Williams with jabs and left right hands almost at will, opening up a bad jab to Williams’ left eye in the process. The cut would force the referee to stop the fight.

Ward faced Jerson Ravelo on June 20, 2008, in Georgetown, Cayman Islands, for the vacant regional NABO super middleweight title. he dominated Ravelo for most of the fight en route to an eighth-round TKO victory.

On May 16, 2009, at Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, Ward defeated former prospect Edison Miranda via unanimous decision. The scores were 116–112, 119–109, and 119–109 for Ward. Ward has shown he has an indoor game as well as an outdoor game.

Miranda couldn’t stay with Ward’s versatility around the ring. Miranda said of Ward in the post-fight

I thought it was going to be easier, but it was harder than I expected. I don’t feel cheated. Andre is the champion. I have respect for him. Ward, who fought his biggest name yet, said it was a bittersweet victory. I’m happy and excited because the fans had a great time, and there were a lot of people here, but I’m not 100% satisfied with my performance. I have to go watch the tape. I did some things well, but I felt I could have improved in other areas.

SECOND WARD VS. KESSLER

Ward’s first fight in the tournament came in his hometown of Oakland, Calif. against Mikkel Kessler (42-1, 32 KOs), ranked No. 1 and tournament favorite, on November 21, 2009.

Kessler’s WBA super middleweight championship was also on the line. Ward defeated Kessler via technical decision in round 11 to claim his first world title. Kessler was the overwhelming favorite for Showtime’s Super Six tournament.

In a career-defining performance, undefeated hometown favorite Ward put the United States on the Super Six shelf and won the WBA super middleweight title with a dominant 11-round technical decision over Kessler of Denmark in their Group Stage 1 bout.

The fight was stopped in round 11 due to cuts on Kessler’s face caused by what was deemed unintentional by Ward. The fight went to the scorecards and Ward was far ahead by scores of 98–92, 98–92 and 97–93 at the time of the stoppage.

ANDRE WARD VS. GREEN

Ward, defending the WBA super middleweight title, outclassed an opponent who spent most of the fight with his back against the ropes. Ward defeated Green via unanimous decision on June 19, 2010.

Although the 30-year-old fought relentlessly, the knockout he needed to win never looked very likely and he looked like an exhausted man at the end as he picked up the second defeat of his professional career of 31 fights.

Throughout the fight, Ward beat Green by almost 200 punches. All three judges scored the fight 120-108 for Ward, who said after his victory fight, “It means a lot to me. I couldn’t get too caught up mentally in the first defense. Now that it’s over, I’m glad I got to defend that belt once. I feel like a real champion now.

Ward said his only regret was not being able to stop Green, who came to survive. Ward advanced to the semi-finals.

ANDRE WARD C. ABRAHAM

Ward’s semifinal opponent was top 10 ranked super middleweight Arthur Abraham (32-2, 26 KOs). The fight took place on May 14, 2011 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Abraham entered having lost two of his previous three fights.

Ward started slowly with Abraham, trying to find a way to penetrate his tight defense. After a few competitive early rounds, Ward took control of the fight, using his ring sense and instincts to control Abraham.

Although Abraham was somewhat passive at times, he gave serious effort and frequently threw combinations that were mostly blocked by Ward. Abraham hurt Ward a few times in the final round, but it wasn’t enough to finish off Ward, who had dominated the fight and won a lopsided unanimous decision.

The three judges scored the fight 120–108, 118–110, and 118–111. ESPN had 118-110 in favor of Ward. Abraham didn’t believe he lost the fight with such wide scores. In 12 rounds, Ward threw 289 jabs. In total, he landed 178 of 444 total punches thrown (40%).

ANDRE WARD AGAINST FROCH

In qualifying for the Super Six finals, Ward fought WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (28-1, 20 KOs) in front of 5626 at Boardwalk Hall on December 17, 2011.

Ward and Froch were rated 1 and 2 respectively by Ring magazine, and Ring magazine’s vacant super middleweight title was up for grabs, along with Froch and Ward’s super middleweight titles.

Ward won the Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament by unanimous decision. In the first seven rounds, Ward dispatched Froch, successfully using his jab to neutralize Froch and defeating Froch to the punch from range and close range.

ANDRE WARD LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT

Ward vs. Barrera

In January 2016, Ward’s light heavyweight debut came against Cuban boxer Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) at Oracle Arena. on March 26, 2016, on HBO.

Barrera was risking his mandatory IBF position in this fight. Barrera became mandatory for Kovalev’s IBF title when he stopped Germany’s Karo Murat in December 2015.

According to Ward, he wasn’t increasing weight for the money, but rather daring to be awesome. 8,532 fans filled the arena on fight night. En route to a big unanimous decision win, Ward dropped Barrera to the canvas in round three as he landed a left hook while on the ropes.

Barrera was also dropped in the eighth round on a body shot, but referee Raul Caiz Sr. saw it as a low blow and consequently deducted a point from Ward. Ward dictated the pace for the vast majority of the fight, showcasing good strength and an overall ring against Barrera.

The three judges scored the bout 117–109, 119–109, and 117–108. Ward landed 166 of 463 thrown (36%) while Barrera landed 111 of 722 punches thrown (15%).

Asked about the potential mega-fight against Kovalev, Ward said, “It’s never a problem. You look at my background. I want to fight the best. I have always fought the best. Sergey Kovalev is a great champion. ‘ For the fight, Ward won $1.85 million and Barrera won a purse of $450,000. The fight averaged 1.064 million viewers and peaked at 1.152 million viewers.

Andre Ward vs. Brand

On June 28, 2016, Roc Nation Sport confirmed that Ward would fight one more time ahead of his mega-fight with Kovalev on July 30 against 39-year-old Colombian boxer Alexander Brand (25-1, 19 KOs).

The fight was scheduled to take place in Oakland, Calif., at the Oracle Center. It was the eighth and final time Ward would fight in his hometown. Brand entered the fight as a 100-1 underdog.

In front of 8,653 hometown fans, Ward unanimously tipped Brand off to take the vacant WBO International light heavyweight title. All three judges had the fight 120-108 for Ward.

Brand, who looked like he came to survive 12 rounds, threw no action which ultimately led to him losing all rounds on all three scorecards. Ward looked slow in victory, not looking like the same fighter he was in 2011.

Ward, however, dictated the fight with a powerful blow. It showed on lap 7 when Brand’s right eye suddenly started swelling. [69] Ward spoke to HBO in the post-fight interview about the Kovalev fight afterwards saying, “I’m excited, I can’t wait to be there. I’ll see you in November. It was Ward’s third fight in eight months, after just three fights from 2012 to 2015.

Ward landed 190 of 490 punches thrown (39%) and Brand landed 45 of 285 (16%). Ward won a purse of $850,000 compared to the small amount of $30,000 won by Brand. The fight averaged over 742,000 viewers on HBO. The drop could have been due to 21 million people tuning in to the Olympics on NBC.

ANDRE WARD VS. KOVALEV

Premier match

Ward fought unified IBF, WBA (undisputed) and WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev at T-Mobile Arena on November 19, 2016.

The fight was announced in June, with a rematch clause, and both fighters maintained their undefeated records through interim bouts. This event marked Ward’s first fight in Las Vegas, Nevada.

After being knocked down in the second round, he won a controversial decision with all three judges scoring the fight 114-113 in favor of Ward.

Ward reiterated how the events of the evening unfolded: “I came down from the canvas against the toughest puncher in the division and smiled. I took the fight from him and closed the show. Ward received the WBA (Undisputed), IBF and WBO light heavyweight titles from Kovalev and became a two-division world champion.

Ward vs. Kovalev (game two)

Kovalev’s manager, Egis Klimas, announced that negotiations have begun for the rematch between Ward and Kovalev. Ward threatened to retire if he didn’t get things “his way” for the rematch.

According to NSAC, The T-Mobile Arena was suspended on June 17, 2017 on HBO PPV. On March 24, 2017, Kovalev revealed via social media that he had signed his end of the deal. It was also noted that the rematch would take place at Mandalay Bay in Paradise, Nevada on HBO PPV. On April 4, Roc Nation Sports and Main Events confirmed that terms had been agreed for the rematch to take place on HBO PPV.

The fight was billed as No Excuses. Ward addressed the audience saying, “I’m going to be brief and sweet. You have what you asked for – now you have to see me June 17th. This time, leave the excuses at home. The Las Vegas Sun has confirmed the fight will take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

On April 10, Kathy Duva said there would be no rematch clause in place for a third fight, meaning whoever wins, won’t be forced to fight another rematch.

The fight purses were revealed before the fight with Ward taking a guaranteed $6.5 million and Kovalev, having no base purse, would receive a percentage of the PPV and gate revenue.

In front of 10,592, the fight ended in a controversy in the 8th round with a victory for Ward. A right hand from Ward got Kovalev in trouble, which was followed by repeated low kicks.

Tony Weeks stopped the fight, with Kovalev sitting on the middle rope injured from beatings. At the time of the stoppage, two judges had Ward ahead 67-66, while the third judge had 68-65 in favor of Kovalev. CompuBox stats showed Ward landed 80 of 238 punches (34%) while Kovalev landed more punches with 95 of his 407 thrown (23%).

ANDRE WARD RETIREMENT

On September 21, 2017, via his website, Ward announced his retirement from boxing at the age of 33. In a statement, he said:

I want to be clear – I am leaving because my body can no longer withstand the rigors of the sport and therefore my desire to fight is no longer there. If I can’t give my family, my team and the fans everything I have, then I shouldn’t be fighting anymore. Also in the statement read. As I step away from the sport of boxing today, I go to the top of your glorious mountain, which has always been my vision and my dream. I did it. We did it. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who has played a part in my journey. You know who you are. I couldn’t have done this without you.
