Prior to his death, Amou Haji was a homeless person; he wanders near the isolated village of Dejgah in the Southern Iranian province of Fars and lived in holes made in the desert outside the village. Although the villagers built a hut for him, he chose not to live there.
Living in the desert, Amou eats rotten meat and drinks five liters of water from a rusty oil can every day. He also loves to smoke but his style of smoking involves inhaling dried cow dung instead of tobacco while eating rotting porcupines.
Local villagers who are obviously very familiar with Haji, explained that the 87-year-old who is covered in ash and dirt trims his hair by placing it over a fire. They also believe that heartbreak was the reason that Amou Haji chose his dirty lifestyle and that he has survived for so long by keeping himself dirty
